British astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell assisted in constructing a large radio telescope and discovered pulsars, cosmic sources of peculiar radio pulses.
Astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell was born July 15, 1943, in Belfast, Ireland. As a research assistant, she helped build a large radio telescope and discovered pulsars, providing the first direct evidence for the existence of rapidly spinning neutron stars. She was also a professor at Open University, dean of science at the University of Bath, and vice president of the Royal Astronomical Society.
