Joaquín Balaguer was sworn in as president of the Dominican Republic when Trujillo resigned. A short-lived military coup forced Balaguer to resign in 1962 and take refuge in the United States. He returned in 1965 and ran successfully for president in 1966. He was reelected to the presidency in 1970 and 1974. He regained the presidency in 1986 and was reelected in 1990. He again won in 1994.
