Dame Joan Sutherland is an Australian operatic soprano internationally acclaimed for her coloratura roles.
Joan Sutherland was born on November 7, 1926 in Sydney, Australia. She studied at the Royal College of Music and was accepted into the Royal Opera Company, Covent Garden where she debuted in Mozart's The Magic Flute. In 1954 she married Richard Bonynge. She made her New York City debut in 1961 at the Metropolitan. Sutherland was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1978.
