Jerry John Rawlings ruled Ghana twice, first in 1979 after a military coup, and then again from 1981 until 2001, as the result of free elections.
Born in Accra in 1947, Jerry John Rawlings has twice ruled the country of Ghana. His first period of rule occurred in 1979 as the result of a military coup, a period that lasted just 112 days. In 1993, Rawlings was elected as the country's president. His rule revived the country's economy. He introduced conservative economic policies and privatized many state-owned companies.
