Born in Accra in 1947, Jerry John Rawlings has twice ruled the country of Ghana. His first period of rule occurred in 1979 as the result of a military coup, a period that lasted just 112 days. In 1993, Rawlings was elected as the country's president. His rule revived the country's economy. He introduced conservative economic policies and privatized many state-owned companies.
