Jean-Paul Belmondo was born on April 9, 1933, in a suburb of Paris, France. After a promising early career as a boxer, Belmondo earned international fame as an actor, appearing in Jean Luc Godard's 1960 film Breathless. The role made him the face of the French New Wave film movement. Belmondo later earned roles in Pierrot le Fou, Mississippi Mermaid and Les Miserables (1995). Suffering a stroke in 2001, he did not return to the screen until 2008.
