Jean-Luc Godard biography
Profile
Jean-Luc Godard was born on December 3, 1930, in Paris, France. He began his career as a critic, writing for the influential film journal Cahiers du cinéma but soon became a filmmaker himself and leader of the "French New Wave" during the 1950s and 1960s. His work--including the groundbreaking Breathless (1960)--draws on existentialism, absurdity and a deep knowledge film history. Godard continues to make provocative and controversial films to this day.
