Janie Porter Barrett biography

Janie Porter Barrett was born on August 9th, 1865 in Athens, Georgia. The daughter of a former slave, Barrett dedicated her life to social work for African-American causes. In 1915, she founded a school to rehabilitate previously incarcerated African-American girls (now known as the Barrett Learning Center). She also established the Virginia State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs. Barret died in 1948.
