Bron in 1730, Jan Ingenhousz was a Dutch physiologist, biologist and chemist who discovered the process of photosynthesis, by which a plant converts carbon dioxide (i.e. sunlight) into oxygen. He is also well known for successfully inoculating the royal Habsburg family against smallpox in 1758. He later made the first scientist to make quantitative measurements of heat conduction in metal rods.
