Born in Cleveland in 1928, Jim Lovell is a former U.S. astronaut who commanded NASA's nearly disastrous Apollo 13 flight to the moon in 1970. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Lovell manned several pre-moon missions, including Gemini 7. Lovell's incredible leadership in saving Apollo 13, by changing the spaceship's course mid-flight, has made him a hero in space exploration.
