J. Michael Bishop is a Nobel Prize winning physician and scholar who made groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research.
J. Michael Bishop, born on February 22, 1936, in York, Pennsylvania, went on to work as a virologist and professor before conducting groundbreaking research in the origins of cancer. He worked with Harold Vamus to form a theory about the presence of oncogenes and their potential activation. The two won the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
