Born on December 20, 1898, in Louisville, Kentucky, Irene Dunne had hoped for an opera career before joining the touring musical ironically named Irene. She became a stage and film actress who did drama and comedy, with roles in Showboat as well as works like Ann Vicker, The Age of Innocence, Sweet Adeline and I Remember Mama. Dunne earned five Academy Award nominations. She died on September 4, 1990, in Los Angeles, California.
