Born in 1948, Ian McEwan is a British novelist known for his dark-humored and perverse subject matter. His first two short-story collections, First Love, Last Rites, and In Between the Sheets, both illuminate the lives of bizarre and grotesque characters. McEwan has won numerous prizes for his work. His 2001 novel Atonement was made into an Oscar-winning film in 2007.
