I.L. Peretz biography
Born in Zamosc, Poland, on May 18, 1852, Jewish author I.L. Peretz wrote folktales, ballads and plays about ideals of Judaism, and is credited with introducing Jews to wider secular viewpoints. He was a social critic, portraying both realistic and romantic views on the stages of Eastern Europe. Among Peretz's important works are "If Not Higher" and the short story "Bontsche the Silent." He died in Poland in 1915.
