Born in 1886 in England, Hugh Lofting was an English-born American author and illustrator who created the character Dr. Dolittle, a sweet and eccentric physician who learns the languages of animals he intends to treat. Lofting created the character for his own children, writing about the chubby doctor in letters he sent back from World War I. His books were widely popular in the 1920s and 1930s.
