Hermann Oberth biography

Synopsis

Hermann Oberth was an astrophysicist born in Romania in 1894. He has been called "the father of German rocketry." His first book (1923, translated as, The Rocket into Interplanetary Space) firmly established his reputation. He served as the president of the German Society for Space Travel in 1928, and later assisted Wernher von Braun during the development of space rockets for the United States.

Astrophysicist, born in Sibiu, Romania. He studied in Munich, and abandoned a medical career for mathematics and astronomy. His first book, Die Rakete zu den Planetenrmen (1923, The Rocket into Interplanetary Space), established his reputation, and in 1928 he was elected president of the German Society for Space Travel. In World War 2 he worked at the experimental rocket centre at Peenemnde, and later assisted Wernher von Braun in developing space rockets in the USA (1955??61).
