Born on December 12, 1912, in Columbus, Mississippi, Henry Armstrong pursued pro boxing in his youth and, by 1938, simultaneously held world championship titles in the featherweight, welterweight and lightweight divisions—becoming the first boxer to hold world championship titles in three weight classes at a single point in time. Armstrong won 144 matches in a career that lasted more than a decade. After retirement, he struggled with alcohol and later went through spiritual change, becoming a minister and youth advocate. He died on October 22, 1988, in Los Angeles, California.
