Helmut Kohl served as chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1988, during which time he oversaw the reunification of East and West Germany.
Born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein (now Rhineland-Palatinate), Germany, on April 3, 1930, Helmut Kohl became first chancellor of a unified Germany in 1990, thereafter becoming a prominent leader in the process of the integration of East and West Germany; the merger was difficult and voters soon showed their discontent. After 16 years in office, Kohl was defeated. In 2001, he was charged with misusing funds.
