Harriet E. Wilson is best known as the first African-American female novelist.
Harriet E. Wilson was the first African-American female novelist, and one of the first African-Americans to publish a novel in the United States. In 1859 Wilson wrote the autobiographical novel Our Nig: Sketches from the Life of a Free Black. The novel treated racism in the pre-Civil War North.
