Born in Schorndorf, Germany, on March 17, 1942, inventor Gottlieb Daimler patented one of the first successful internal-combustion engines in 1885. He also helped develop the commercially feasible four-wheeled automobile. He later founded the Daimler company, which produced the first Mercedes car in 1899. Daimler died on March 6, 1900, in Cannstatt, Germany.
