Gerry Adams was born on October 6, 1948, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In his 20s, he became a strategist in the Irish Republican Army and was imprisoned, though never officially convicted. In 1982, Adams was elected president of Sinn Féin, the political wing of the IRA. In the 2000s, he helped end sectarian violence and form a power-sharing government.
