Frenchman Georges Pompidou rose from schoolteacher to Premier and then President, continuing many of his predecessor's, Charles de Gaulle, policies. Pompidou was a successful negotiator in two of France's most turbulent episodes:the Algerian crisis and the 1968 student-worker revolts. He remained President until his death in 1974.
