A two-time French prime minister, Georges Bidault was active in the French Resistance during World War II and a strong negotiator for the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). However, he later fled the country to avoid arrest after opposing Charles de Gaulle in granting independence to Algeria.
