Basketball player George Mikan was born in Joliet, Illinois, on June 18, 1924. He won five National Basketball Association (NBA) championships while playing for Minneapolis. He was 6 ft 10 in tall, setting a new height standard for basketball players. He retired in 1969 and became a practicing lawyer. He died in 2005.
