Profile

U.S. union leader George Meany was born on Aug. 16, 1894, in New York City. A plumber by trade, he became president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1952 and merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). He kept the AFL-CIO away from radicalism, but was a strict leader, causing friction with the Teamsters union and the United Automobile Workers.
