George Brinton McClellan biography

George Brinton McClellan, born on Dec. 3, 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy. He served in the Mexican War and worked in the railroad industry until the Civil War broke. He was placed in command of the Union's Department of the Ohio. Despite early success, President Lincoln was discouraged by McClellan’s inability to claim Richmond and he removed McClellan from command.
