Born in 1286, Frederick III was the second son of German king Albert I. His father was murdered in 1398 and Frederick became the duke of Austria. Henry VII became king, but his death in 1313 led to a double election. Frederick III was elected and so was Louis IV of Bavaria. They battled for eight years. Louis eventually defeated Frederick in 1322. In 1325, Louis gave Frederick control over Austria.
