French writer François VI, duke de La Rochefoucauld was born into a noble family on Sept. 15, 1613, in Paris, France. He joined the army and also played a major role in Fronde, which inspired his later work. He mastered the maxime, a French form of epigram that expresses paradoxical truth. He published 500 reflections on human behavior, calling the work Maximes.
