French director François Truffaut established the New Wave movement in film. He won an Oscar for his 1972 film, Day for Night.
French film critic and filmmaker François Truffaut was born in Paris, France, on February 6, 1932. In 1959, his film Les Quatre Cents Coups won a prize for best direction at the Cannes film festival. That established him as a leader in the New Wave movement, which was against commercial production and emphasized aesthetic theory. Truffaut made films until his death in 1984. Day for Night won an Oscar in 1972.
