Florence Mills was born on January 25, 1895, in or near Washington, D.C. She made her stage debut at age five as “Baby Florence.” Her breakthrough happened in 1921, when she appeared in the Off-Broadway musical Shuffle Along. In 1922, she appeared on Broadway. The song “I'm a Little Blackbird Looking for a Bluebird” became her trademark song. She planned to start an all-black revue, but died in 1927.
