Born on December 8, 1933, in Jersey City, New Jersey, comedian Flip Wilson grew up foster homes. He served in the air force from 1950 to 1954. After leaving the air force, he worked as a bellhop and did stand-up acts at nightclubs. He appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965, which led to TV appearances and eventually The Flip Wilson Show.
