Fletcher Henderson was born on December 18, 1897, in Cuthbert, Georgia. He studied Chemistry at Atlanta University, before getting work as a pianist. In 1921, he started working for Black Swan records, organizing bands for singers. His full-time career as a bandleader began in 1923. His band played until the mid-1930s. He sold his arrangements to Benny Goodman, helping create the swing era sound.
