Fiorello La Guardia was born in New York City on December 11, 1882. He practiced law before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1917. He served as New York City’s may from 1933 to 1945. During his time in politics, La Guardia opposed Prohibition and supported woman suffrage. The progressive Republican declined a 4th term as mayor and died in 1947.
