Fanny Coppin biography

Fanny Coppin was born October 15, 1837, in Washington, D.C. In 1865, she began teaching at the Institute for Colored Youth. In 1869 she became head principal of the Institute. In 1871 she introduced a normal-school department. To the ordinary work of teacher training, she added a practice-teaching system in 1878. She resigned in 1902 and became a missionary in South Africa.
