Arab statesman Faisal I was king of Iraq from 1921 to 1933 and a leader in advancing Arab nationalism during and after World War I.
Faisal I was born on May 20, 1885, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In 1915, he traveled to Damascus to reach an understanding with the secret Arab nationalist societies there. When in the following year the Arab revolt was declared, he was declared king of Syria. To ease resistance to British rule, Britain decided in March 1921 to sponsor Fayal as king of an Iraqi government.
