F.A. Hayek was born May 8, 1899 in Vienna, Austria. Noted for his criticisms of the Keynesian welfare state and of totalitarian socialism, Hayek's methodological ideas were formed against the backdrop of intense debates over the viability and appropriateness of alternative political and economic systems. In 1974 he shared the Nobel Prize for Economics with Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal.
