Esa-Pekka Salonen burst onto the international scene in 1983 with his performance of Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony with the Philharmonic in London. In 1986 he and the Los Angeles Philharmonic won a Grammy Award for their recording of Witold Lutoslawski's Symphony No. 3. He led the orchestra for 15 years, but in 2007 announced that he would step down in order to devote more time to composing.
