Ellen Gilchrist biography

Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on February 20, 1935, Ellen Gilchrist studied at Vanderbilt University (Millsap College) in Jackson, Mississippi before enrolling at the University of Arkansas. Gilchrist has written poetry, short storie, and novels, and is best known for her satirical treatment of the upper-class world of the southern states of the USA. Her novels include The Annunciation (1983), I Cannot Get You Close Enough (1990) and Net of Jewels (1993). Among her short-story collections are Victory Over Japan (1984, American Book Award), Flight of Angels (1998), and The Cabal and Other Stories (2000).
