Canadian-born pathologist Elizabeth Stern (born September 19, 1915) joined the faculty of the University of California in 1963 as professor of epidemiology. While there, she tracked the 250 stages of a cell's progression from normal to cancerous, making early cancer screening possible. She also discovered a link between prolonged use of oral contraceptives and cervical cancer.
