Elijah Lovejoy biography
Profile
In 1827, Elijah Lovejoy became editor of the St. Louis Observer, a Presbyterian weekly. His strong antislavery messages were condemned in the slave state of Missouri, causing him to move his press to the free state of Illinois. Despite its new location, the printing press was a target for mob violence, and Lovejoy was killed in 1837, strengthening the abolitionist movement.
