After a nervous breakdown at age 17, Elfriede Jelinek turned to writing as a form of self-expression. Her poetry and novels use structure and satire as a means to explore issues like dependency, authority, and gender oppression. Her semiautobiographical novel The Piano Teacher was adapted for the screen in 2001. Jelinek was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004.
