As a young man, Edwin Booth (1833–1893) cared for his alcoholic actor father. After his death, Booth became a leading man and comanager of the Winter Garden Theater in New York. He earned great acclaim and popularity as Hamlet. His brother John Wilkes Booth's assassination of President Lincoln in 1865 forced Edwin out of the limelight briefly, but he returned to even further success abroad.
