Dame Edith Mary Evans was born on Feb. 8, 1888 in London. She made her professional debut in 1912 in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida. She favored interesting and difficult roles, and was known to turn down leads for juicier minor parts. In 1925 she joined the Old Vic theatre company and stayed with them for many years. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1946. She died in 1976.
