Deng Xiaoping was a Chinese communist leader, the most powerful figure in the People's Republic of China from the late 1970s until his death in 1997.

Deng engineered reforms in virtually all aspects of China's political, economic, and social life, restoring China to domestic stability and economic growth after the excesses of the Cultural Revolution.
