Cool Papa Bell was born on May 17, 1903, Starkville, Miss. He began as a pitcher for the St. Louis Stars in the Negro National League earned the nickname Cool when he struck out legendary Oscar Charleston; Bell's manager added “Papa.” He reputedly stole 175 bases in a 200-game season. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. He died in 1991.
