In the early 1990s, Christiane Nuesslein-Volhard began studying genes that control development in zebra fish. Her investigations helped elucidate genes and other cellular substances involved in human development and in the regulation of normal human physiology. In 1995 she jointly won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for her research concerning early embryonic development.
