Charles I of Austria biography

Born on August 17, 1887, in Persenbeug Castle, Austria, Charles I succeeded to the throne of Austria-Hungary in 1914. He desired to remove his country from World War I, but lost public support after backing French claims to the region of Alsace-Lorraine. Due to state nationalism, he renounced power in November, 1918 and was ultimately exiled to Madeira. He died on April 1, 1922.
