Charles H. Best was born in West Pembroke, Washington County, Maine, on February 27, 1899. Best studied medicine in Toronto, Canada, and enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving in World War I. After the war, he returned to medicine and worked with fellow physiologist Sir Frederick Banting. Together, they discovered the technique of using insulin to treat diabetes. Banting was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 and shared the prize money with Best. Best died in 1978.
