Of Spanish descent, the devout, learned Catherine of Aragon was the 16th-century Queen of England due to her marriage to Henry VIII.
Born on December 16, 1485 in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, Catherine was the learned daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Catherine married the Prince of Wales, but upon his death would later wed Henry VIII. Catherine was held in favor until the king annulled their marriage in quest for a male heir, pursuing other unions. She was banished from court and from her only surviving child, Mary.
