Cassius Marcellus Clay was born on October 19, 1810, in Kentucky. His father was a slave-owner, but Clay became influenced by abolitionists in college. In 1835, he joined the Kentucky legislature and was defeated in 1840 due to his slavery views. He published the anti-slavery journal True American. He continued to participate in politics, but shortly before his death in 1903, he was judged mentally insane.
