Carroll O’Connor was born on August 2, 1924, in New York City. He served in World War II as a merchant marine. An actor, he later performed with the Gate Theatre in Dublin. He appeared on stage and had a several TV performances in the 1960s, but it was his portrayal of Archie Bunker on the 1970s sitcom All in the Family that made him a star. He won four Emmy Awards for the role. He died on June 21, 2001.
